When I first came to Denmark, I was suprised by the quiet streets during Christmas time.  It was very important to me that I brought the warmth of Christmas caroling to Denmark and brought some life and warmth to this holiday that is celebrated so beautifully throughout December.

At first my singing was strangely received.  Danes would hide, listening, but not wanting to make contact in any way. Occasionally I would get a smile or two, but more often then not, people pretended that I didn’t exist and would just walk by.  I suppose it was because they thought I was going to ask for money or try to sell them religion.

By faith, I am not religious, but I love the holiday season and all the music that comes along with it.  The music somehow touches me to my core and makes the Christmas spirit in me come alive.  It is a time for giving, and my voice is what I have to give.

I have been singing for many years now around Christmas.  More and more Danes are touched and receptive to the songs of the Christmas season and to my singing in the streets. My little town Nyborg hires me every year to sing at the yearly Christmas market in December. I sing both in Danish and in English.  Danish is to make more people feel comfortable and to allow me to integrate further into the society that I have chosen to be a part of.  Singing Danish music binds and connects me to Denmark.
